Rebels Postseason Opportunties Sliping Away

Rebels Postseason Opportunties Sliping Away

Las Vegas, NV

The college basketball season never allows time for reflection, and while it would be great to examine UNLV’s collapse against Arch Rival UNR, the Rebels have to focus their attention on a team that nearly 50 pieced them a few weeks back. Such is the plight of play in the Mountain West. UNLV has little time to sulk, as they will need a win in Colorado Springs to keep their slim Regular season Mountain West Title hopes alive.

If there is any consolation, it’s that some of the Rebels best performances have followed a loss. They rebounded from a loss to LMU with a win over then #13 ranked Creighton in what was perhaps their best game of the year. They responded to a loss at San Diego St by blowing out New Mexico and responded from the aforementioned Air Force defeat to reel off 5 wins in a row. The problem is, UNLV has no more room for bounce back victories. The Rebels sit at 14-10 and need to finish strong to have any hope of making the postseason. A win against Air Force would go a long way in accomplishing that. This team is talented enough to not only get that victory but to potentially execute on that strong finish and run the table. If they did that it would allow them to finish one of the toughest conferences in America with 13 wins. The irony is had they just finished strong against, Utah St, Colorado St or UNR and that postseason tournament just might have been the NCAA. Here’s 3 keys to victory.

1) Start fast – UNLV did not show up in the last Air Force game at all so we don’t really know how the Rebels match up. Putting some pressure on the early should give an indication.

2) Take something away – The academy wants to either shoot layups or threes in the first game they got both of them many of the wide open variety. Against a system team like this the Rebels must take one of those two things away.

3) Play in the final four – The Rebels have left much to be desires with their execution down the stretch. The Utah St and UNR results are direct impacts of the lack of execution in the final 4 minutes of the game. UNLV will need to galvanize around their young PG and execute if this game is tight down the stretch.
