Rebels Eyeing First Round Bye

Rebels Eyeing First Round Bye

UNLV faces must win in Laramie

I’ll be the first to admit, this Rebels team has been difficult to peg. When you think they’re going to play their best, they lay an egg, and just when you leave them for dead, they respond like champions. Ironically, the 2023-24 UNLV Runnin Rebels Men’s basketball team has a chance to be actual champions. With 4 games left, the Rebels sit just a game out of first. By the randomness of a scheduling quirk, they don’t have a rematch with first place Utah St scheduled. The Rebels will need help if they are to win just their second Mountain West title in program history.

It starts with helping themselves as the Rebels will need to show up and pick up the next two contest at Wyoming and at home against San Jose St. Then a little luck wouldn’t hurt. The Aggies have the easiest schedule, with 3 games against the bottom of the Mountain West, and a home game against New Mexico. Because they own the tiebreaker, the Aggies would have to loss two of the next four in for 1st place to be in play. Even if that doesn’t happen, there is a very real chance that the Rebels can win their way into a top 3 seed and a buy in the first round of the Conference Tournament. With games against San Diego St, and UNR, the Rebels essentially control their own destiny.
