Rebels Face Gut Check In The Bay

Unlv looks to rebound after getting hammered by Air Force

The Final margin was 32, but lets be honest it wasn’t even that close. UNLV mens basketball was dismantled from tip to final whistle. The Rebels shot a woeful 32% in the 1st half and then managed to get worst. They made just 8 field goals and manged to put the Wilson Basketball through the hoop exactly one time from behind the arc, in the second half. The Rebels hit five total three for the entire game, a number that seems almost impossible in today’s wide open, free flowing style of basketball. It was a terrible performance one that brought back instant flashbacks of the Southern game on opening night. In many ways however, this one was much worse. The Rebels didn’t have the Boone’s and it was DJ Thomas’ first game. 17 games into the season, the group that started the game against Air Force is about as static as the Rebels are going to get this year. The loss, the margin and the effort, were all staggering to take in, especially considering the fight that this team showed, going on the road and snapping the Nation’s longest home winning streak. Just when you started to feel as if this team was different, they put whatever that was on Tuesday night, on film for the world to see, and on the home floor no less. Now this team, has to go to the Bay area and face a San Jose team that beat this very same Air Force squad at their place.

If there’s been one consistent for the Rebels this season, it’s that they’ve been inconsistent. It would not surprise me in the least if this same team turned right around and beat the Spartans, a lot of it having to do with the balance of probability. They can’t possibly go 5-28 from behind the arc again can they? The law of averages says no. At the very least this team has to show signs of life, after what can only be described as a disheartning performance in their last game. Dishearting to the players, coaches, and all the fans that have supported the Rebels over the years. The biggest blow was having to hear senior Keylan Boone admit “We just didn’t play hard tonight” It’s Gut Check time for the Rebels. The Air Force loss feels a lot like Southern, and is 180 from the feeling of the Creighton and Boise St wins. Which team shows up, Saturday?
